Tlaloc stone figure, Ethnological Museum, Berlin
We’re very grateful to our friend Rob in Germany who has kindly sent us a short video clip that he took in the State Ethnological Museum in Berlin of this stone figure of the Mexica rain god Tlaloc. This piece came to London in 2002 for the major Aztecs exhibition at the Royal Academy. We quote below from the exhibition catalogue.
The stone figure is 40 cms high, is Aztec, and is on display in the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Preussischer Kulturbesitz, Ethnologisches Museum. The Museum purchased the object in 1862.
The two main characteristics of images of the rain god Tlaloc, who was worshipped in Mesoamerica lone before the arrival of the Aztecs, are large, goggle-like eyes and the fangs of a beast of prey. The present sculpture is notable for the fact that all these features are represented by two serpents. The intertwined bodies of the serpents form the eyes and nose, while their heads face each other to form the mouth with its array of sharp teeth.
