Stone butterfly
Platform with Butterflies and Symbols of Sacrifice and Warfare, Mexica/Aztec, 1325-1531 CE, stone, width 1 metre, Museo Nacional de Antropología, Mexico City.
Like flowers and butterflies, warriors were expected to have a short but glorious life, and both were symbols of the souls of brave, dead warriors flying up to heaven to accompany the Sun on its daily journey through the sky.
