Seated old man

Seated old man

Figure of a seated old man, stone, Aztec, c. 1325-1521 CE, height 22 cms., Ethnological Museum, Berlin (collected by Carl Uhde in the 1830s).

The figure is undecorated and wears only a loincloth. The man’s old age is visible in the deep creases on the cheeks, the forehead, and around the eyes. The seated, forward-leaning pose and the visible spine underscore his great age.
