Statue of Chicomecoatl, stone, Aztec, c. 1325-1521 CE, height 68 cms., Ethnological Museum, Berlin (collected by Carl Uhde in the 1830s).
The maize goddess was responsible for fertility and the most important crop, maize. The goddess is always depicted with a rectangular headdress, decorated with rosettes. In her left hand she holds two maize cobs, while in her right she has a ‘chicahuaztli’, a rattle which was also used in fertility rites.
