Chalchiuhtlicue, stone, Mexica-Aztec, c. 1325-1521 CE, Ethnological Museum, Berlin (collected by Carl Uhde in the 1830s, acquired in 1862)
In the Aztec world of the gods, Chalchiuhtlicue was the goddess of water, lakes, springs and rivers. Her name translates to ‘She of the Jade Skirt’. Here, one hand is broken off, while the other hand appears once to have held an object, perhaps a musical instrument.
