Model double temple, clay, Mexica-Aztec, c. 1325-1521 CE, height 74 cms., Ethnological Museum, Berlin (collected by Carl Uhde in the 1830s).
In contrast to the Maya, the Aztecs often erected double temples on their pyramids. There, two divinities were worshipped. In their capital city the rain god Tlaloc and the patron god Huitzilopochtli were honoured. The altars for (human) sacrifices were set up on the circular platforms in front of the entrances to the temples.
