Sculpture of a cicada with the head of a monkey, stone, Mexica-Aztec, c. 1325-1521 CE, Ethnological Museum, Berlin (collected by Carl Uhde in the 1830s, acquired in 1862)
After the rainy period, cicadas were found in great numbers in the fields. This animal, however, has become a mythical creature due to its monkey head decorated with long ear pendants. We do not know what significance it had.
