Find out more5th Aztec emperor Ahuitzotl, Tovar Manuscript
ORIGINAL QUESTION received from - and thanks to - Gabrielle Racine: I have not been able to find anything about Cuauhtemoc’s siblings, except that he had a brother called Chimalpilli and a sister called Xilabela, or Quetcalcoatl. But the Emperor Ahuitzotl must’ve had plenty of children, with all the wives he had... Could you name a few? Thanks in advance. (Answered by Anastasia Kalyuta for Mexicolore)
Ahuitzotl’s children are recorded by Hernando Alvarado Tezozomoc in his Crónica Mexicayotl and later copied by Domingo Francisco Chimalpahin in his Relaciones. The Información de Isabel de Montezuma states that Ahuitzotl’s daughter Tiacapan (literally The Firstborn) was the chief wife of Motecuhzoma Xocoyotzin and mother of Isabel Moctezuma. Xilabela is a name invented a posteriori (the ‘b’ sound does not exist in Classical Nahuatl).
Here is the full list of his children, as recorded by Tezozomoc:-
• Cuautemoc
• Atlixcatzin tlacateccatl (one of the four highest military chiefs in Tenochtitlan).
• Nameless daughter who married Motecuhzoma Xocoyotzin, mother of Isabel de Moctezuma
• Tlacaelel the Younger
• Motecuhzoma
• Citlalcohuatl
• Azcacohuatl
• Axicyotzin
• uauhtztzimitzin
• Xiconoc
• Macuimalinalli
• Acamapich
• Huitzilihuitl
• Machimale
• Yaotzin
• Pachimaltzin
• Yohualpopocatzin
• Acachimaltzin
• One son (name not indicated)
• One son (name not indiicated) in Tres crónicas mexicanas. Textos recopilados por Domingo Chimalpahin 2012:130-133).
We only have some contradictory and mixed information about Cuauhtemoc, Atlixcatzin (the first husband of Isabel Moctezuma in the Información) and the nameless daughter (Tiacapan?). As for the others we know only that they existed.
Special thanks to Dr. Anastasia Kalyuta, an ethnohistorian in St. Petersburg and member of our Panel of Experts, for researching this for us. The edition of Crónica Mexicayotl consulted by Dr. Kalyuta is the edition by Rafael Tena, 2012, in the series Cien de México.
