Question for February 2014

Did the Aztecs ever meet the Incas?? Asked by Smannell & Enham CE Primary School. Chosen and answered by Professor Elizabeth Graham

Not that we know of!

(Professor Cecelia Klein, also on our Panel of Experts, adds: There is no evidence, either documentary or archaeological, that the Aztecs ever met the Inkas.)

Our In-House Team add: this must be the shortest answer we’ve put on our website to date! Though the Aztecs in Mexico and the Incas in Peru built empires at much the same time, it seems they never knew of each other’s existence. Now just imagine if they had...!

Ofcourse we are a people of oral tradition since the churches burned most of our books. So this info was passed down by word.

Actually the indigenous elders of Ixtlan de rio, Nayarit say that the Incas would travel to Nayarit to hold ceremony and have done so for hundreds of years up until the spanish invasion that put a hold on things till recently. Every year a handful of peruvians come back there on the day of the flower to continue with the tradition their ancestors carried. This was also confirmed with a peruvian elder that is well connected in the native world.
