Find out moreWhich was the biggest ancient Maya city?? Asked by Greenfield School. Chosen and answered by Dr. Ivan Šprajc
The two biggest Maya cities were Calakmul and Tikal. Although Tikal is more famous, probably because it has better preserved architecture and has been extensively excavated by a number of archaeological teams, Calakmul was probably even larger: about 120 stelae (stone monuments with depictions and inscriptions carved in relief) have been found there, but only 40 at Tikal. However, both cities were the capitals of powerful kingdoms, which often waged war against each other.
