Left hand side rules!

That’s why Maya mothers have always carried their babies on the LEFT hip, from the age of 3 months (marked by the ancestral ‘Hetzmek’ ceremony, still performed today in Maya communities).
Not that the right side didn’t have valued associations: ‘Concepts of goodness, cleanliness, purity, softness, protection, beauty, justice, peace, conclusion, grace, proof, effort, and many more are associated with it’.
’Positive values of the left side included its being the side where the heart is and the place where a delegate sat to be closest to some authority. The supreme rulers were believed to be located to the left of the god they represented on earth...’
’In some cases the supernatural force received by human beings favoured by the gods was thought to reside in the left side of the body. The corpses of women who died at their first delivery had to be protected by their mates to avoid their being mutilated. Sorcerers and warriors tried to cut off the left arm and one of the fingers of the left hand to be used magically to harm their enemies. Even today, in communities of Nahuatl origin, the left hand possesses the power of the heart side, and it is not wise to extend it to ghosts. This suggests that, although the right hand was linked to daily activities, especially those demanding dexterity, the left hand was closely associated with the world of the supernatural.’
