The Aztecs may have had as many as 3,000 different medicinal herbs - no wonder there are so many ‘home remedies’ in Mexico today! (Written/compiled by Ian Mursell/Mexicolore)
Their knowledge of herbal medicine was greatly admired by the conquering Spanish - in fact the remedy for hiccups was brought to Europe and continued to be used for 200 years! Apart from treatments for regular pains, injuries and illnesses, the Aztecs had developed herbal brews for fear, bad breath, body odour, 'tiredness in public office', to help someone cross a river or lake, even for someone struck by lightning! (Image and info taken from 'The Badianus Manuscript', written by an Aztec doctor in 1552 - the first medical text book in the Americas: amazingly, it was only rediscovered in Rome in 1929 ...)
