Why did the Mexica believe in a four-year journey to the underworld?? Asked by Blackheath Prep School. Chosen and answered by Dr. Ximena Chávez Balderas

When someone died of illness or old age it was believed that their ‘soul’ travelled to the underworld, and that this journey took four years. This time wasn’t spent resting! The ‘soul’ had to pass through nine places filled with danger; these included negotiating: a river with the help of the owner’s dog, a mountain pass that was unbearably cold, and a land of animals that devoured human hearts. In preparation for this journey, funeral attendants would warn the deceased of all they needed to do to protect themselves, and gave them gifts to be used en route. For example, (s)he was given cloaks to keep warm, and a greenstone - representing the heart - to be ‘paid’ to the wild beasts. To ensure their speedy delivery, these items would be burnt.
Why four years? Archaeologist Eduardo Matos Moctezuma has proposed that this time period corresponds to how long it takes for a body to turn into a skeleton. I agree, this is very possibly why they believed it took four years to reach ‘the place of bones’. To enter the land of the unfleshed, you had to have turned into a skeleton...

Español: Cuando alguien moría por enfermedad o por vejez se pensaba que su “alma” viajaría al inframundo. Los mexicas creían que este viaje duraba cuatro años. Durante este tiempo el “alma” no se encontraba descansando, sino que emprendía un viaje por nueve lugares llenos de peligros. Por ejemplo, el “alma” tenía que cruzar un río ayudado por su perro, pasar entre dos montañas donde había un frío insoportable, llegar a un sitio con animales que comían corazones, entre otros. Para estar preparado para el viaje, los asistentes al funeral le contaban al difunto todo lo que debía hacer para protegerse y le hacían regalos para que usara en su jornada. Por ejemplo, le daban mantas para cuidarse del frío y una cuenta de piedra verde que representaba el corazón, para que se la entregara a las fieras. Para que estos objetos le llegaran con prontitud, los quemaban.
¿Por qué duraba cuatro años? El arqueólogo Eduardo Matos Moctezuma ha propuesto que este tiempo corresponde a lo que tarda un cuerpo en transformarse en esqueleto. Pienso, que tiene toda la razón y muy posiblemente por eso pensaban que tardaba cuatro años en llegar al inframundo, el lugar de los huesos. Es necesario ser un esqueleto, para poder llegar al lugar de los descarnados.
