School children enjoy a visit to Chelsea Physic Garden
Yes, you can find a store of Mexican plants at Kew Gardens, but for a smaller (though still with 4,000 plants), cosier, more intimate experience, nothing beats a visit to Chelsea Physic Garden, London’s oldest botanic garden, founded in 1673...
After a recently (2022) completed Glasshouse Restoration Project, get right up close to a wonderful range of plants native to Mexico. The signage has improved greatly, there are now child-friendly panels encouraging young visitors to search for particular species with mini-globes showing exactly where they originate from, and the Garden has its own dedicated Learning Centre for organised school groups.
The following are just some of the Mexican plants that have a new home in Chelsea:-
• Agave
• Avocado
• Barrel cactus
• Cacao
• Chicle
• Hallucinogenic cacti
• Medicinal plants
• Vanilla
