Order of the Aztec Eagle

You may be intrigued to know that Queen Elizabeth II was awarded the official ‘Order of the Aztec Eagle’ - the highest Mexican order awarded to foreigners - way back in 1973 (Prince Philip received the same award even earlier, in 1964). The late Queen visited Mexico twice, in 1975 and 1983. Both members of the royal family received the highest collar or ribbon class, reserved for heads of state.

It was on display (back in 2006) amongst a collection of Her Majesty’s insignia in the Ballroom, the largest room in the Palace (where investitures and state banquets are held). Since coming to the throne in 1952, The Queen has visited over 117 countries on official duties and received over 80 foreign orders - the largest number ever received by a British sovereign.

In the ‘Americas and Middle East’ section is this beautiful ribbon and gold pendant; clearly visible is the Mexican national emblem portraying the founding of Tenochtitlan by the Mexica (Aztecs) in 1325.
