Find out moreFaviola, a 12-year-old girl from Oapan, Guerrero, Mexico, introduces herself in Náhuatl, Spanish and English...
The script of what Faviola says goes as follows:-
‘Nextili
’My name is Faviola
’Me llamo Faviola
’Notoca Faviola’
‘Nextili’ means ‘Hello’, so, when Faviola says
Nextili - notoca Faviola
she’s saying ‘Hello, my name is Faviola’.
Now you should be able to say ‘Hello, my name is ____’ in Náhuatl! (Remember, the ‘x’ is pronounced ‘sh’)
This short video was kindly made for and sent specially to us by Owen Thomas, from the town of San Miguel de Allende. Owen writes:-
The recording was made in my living room where I had welcome visitors from a village which is an eight hour (or more) adventure by car from here. My home in San Miguel is many miles and passes along many cultural roads from their home town. Most of them visit their home town very seldom, they have come here in order to cross over the poverty line of their home town and sell small gift items to the tourists who come to San Miguel de Allende. Most tourists do not visit their home town of Oapan; there are many bridges to cross before English school children can observe the reality of life among those who live in a REAL village and speak Náhuatl as their native language...
Many thanks, Owen, Faviola and Uriel!

I enjoyed learning a few Nahuatl words. It would be great if you could buy a Nahuatl phrasebook or dictionary.

Thanks, Sofia. I’m afraid we don’t (yet) have CDs on Nahuatl. But it’s a great idea you’ve given us...
