New insights into Mesoamerican colours: opening to a universal meaning (2)

Mexicolore contributor Richard Jehl

This is the second and concluding part to Richard Jehl’s article on the connections between colours, calendars, celestial movements and human vitality.

It is not possible in the current article, to present in greater detail the cycles of the planets, how they appear in the Codices (where very few researchers have so far detected them), what they meant for our ancestors and what they continue to mean for us. A work of several hundred pages would be necessary to thoroughly treat this subject.
As an enthusiastic student of ancient and particularly Amerindian cultures, I can only share here the ever-greater wonder that I experience, of discovering that the important symbols which have nourished, guided and enlightened ancient civilisations, were always very closely connected to the observation, from the Earth, of the different celestial bodies and their behaviour.
The 9 Lords of the Night, the 13 Lords of the Heavens, and the other deities of Amerindians for example, are eminently sacred symbols whose meaning directly derives from the influence of certain celestial bodies. It is also a real joy to improve the understanding of these symbols, by discovering that they have their exact analogues in other civilisations. These symbols reveal a truly universal knowledge, because they have never belonged to only one culture. Their sacred meaning can be rediscovered today by the sincere seeker (picture 23).

When a sixth tint is added, it closes the series of colours in pre-Columbian America. This last colour is Brown/Orange. Sometimes it is replaced by White (picture 26).
I showed in the book I already published, that the six principles represented by these six colours describe an alchemical process of maturation of the human being. This process harmonizes the human individual with surrounding Nature. In Amerindian drawings, Man himself becomes a Hill, he literally melts into the fertile nature of which he becomes a wonderfully conscious part (picture 27).
It is a real and authentic initiation we are talking about here : the individual becomes aware of his own place in the hierarchy of the grandiose forces in which he is immersed.
Astronomically speaking, six principles or six colours are used to subdivide a cycle into six. Three cycles of 4 become equivalent to two cycles of 6, in particular. The subdivision of a year into 18 periods (of 20 days each) becomes natural, and we can once again notice the relation to the planet Mars, because the 36 decans of Martian nature, are passed by Mars one after the other in two years (Mars cycle) : 18 x 2 is equal to 36 (picture 28).

The influences specific to the 24 hours (many Amerindian diagrams are subdivided into 12 and 24) come from the combination of the Sun (1), Mars (2) and Jupiter (12) : thus the Sun travels twice through 12 zones (jupiterian heritage) in two years, time during which Mars completes a single cycle. Mars therefore goes through 24 zones or steps, while the Sun goes through 12 twice. 24 are also 4 x 6. Etc.

3) The practical interest of knowing celestial cycles
It could rightly be pointed out to me, that there are exceptions here and there in the ordering of colours, and in the attributions to the cardinal points.
However, each of these exceptions can be explained, as can the differences in attributions.
To understand in more depth the notion of cycle and that of succession of phases, it is essential to study the three distinct ways a circuit passes through four different zones. One must then understand and check, how by coincidence and naturally, it is possible to move from one circuit to another (pictures 29, 30, 31).

Independently of the starting and final principles :
- The order of succession Water-Fire-Air-Earth concerns the Earth-Moon relation.
- The order Water-AIR-FIRE-Earth is the signature, in every tradition, of the rotation of the Earth around the Sun: it therefore concerns the Earth-Sun relation (producing seasons).
- The order Water-FIRE-EARTH-AIR concerns the relation of the Earth/Moon system to the Sun. We find this order in some Amerindian calendars, and in specific Asian mandalas. It is also the order of succession of the elements attributed to zodiac signs, in European cultures.
These three distinct circuits coexisted in many cultures, but what each means precisely that distinguishes it from the other two, has long ago been forgotten.
They reflect, according to my own research and in the order in which I present them above, what Christian metaphysics has identified through the «Divinity in Three Persons» : Holy Spirit, Son and Father.

The circular diagram I am showing here (picture 32), is the one I use in my teachings as a «reference diagram». It shows how the different polarities of the elements are interdependent, and it can be used to analyze how to go from one of the circuits to the other two. I am not going to give a full explanation of it here, because that would take us too far; I will simply point out that specific couples and associations appear immediately. These precise associations are found in many different traditions, and especially in Amerindian and Asian cultures.
They come from the remanence of one element relative to the next: each manifested principle contains the next in its potential state. This is why we also find magnificent Amerindian friezes in which the colours overlap. I could give an entire lecture on each of these friezes, showing their relation with the logic that it is necessary to use in quantum physics and to which some scientists open their minds nowadays (non-aristotelian logic such as that of epistemologist Stephane Lupasco).
Please take a moment to check how similar the associations Green/Yellow, Red/Green, Blue/Red, and Yellow/Blue are in Amerindian Codices and in Asian mandalas!

I did not invent the circular «reference diagram» I use in my teachings; it comes from the work of Franz Bardon. The Yellow of the Earth principle appears Brown, which in fact is a dark Yellow.
The four pairs Green/Yellow, Red/Green, Blue/Red, and Yellow/Blue represent the two polarities of the four ethers which our «Body of Life» (Vital Body or Soul) is made of. The negative polarities are the small square, the positive the big square. Each of these polarities have a function in the economy and the perpetuation of life. The four arcs are a third polarity, a conservative one (pictures 32, 33).
To conclude this article, I would like to point out that any practice, whether collective or individual, is articulated into successive phases. At each of these phases is assigned a task or a definite work, allowing the overall movement or action to correctly progress and to succeed.

Humans firstly aknowledged that seeds had to be planted at favorable times of the year, and not randomly, in order to ensure a good yield (agricultural calendars).
But we can notice even more profoundly, that everything in nature proceeds in successive phases, to reach maturity, deliver a work, or complete a cycle : thus a seed to grow, become a plant, bear fruit and become perennial inevitably goes through certain stages IN A CERTAIN ORDER and not in a haphazard way; it is the same for the human embryo which goes through very specific phases before reaching birth, its organs and tissues are formed in a very specific order, etc.
All spiritual practices intended to balance and harmonize the individual with his environment and with the different planes of consciousness, are based, when correctly conceived, on phases and on a program which must be followed in a precise order, that is to say which must be respected. These phases in fact mime those through which natural processes pass, namely the movements of the celestial bodies around the Earth.

When a Taoist performs exercises destined to develop his vitality, he concentrates on specific points or body areas in a certain order, and he knows why this order is significant and that it must be respected. Same thing for a person who practices meditation: meditation themes don’t produce the same effects depending on the order in which they are considered.
By studying Asian representations of the aura’s colors, as well as the names given to acupuncture points, I personnally realized that energy circulations without any doubt mime astronomical cycles. In fact cosmic rhythms have their equivalent in our biology and in our vitality, in which they produce human biorhythms. Our biological rhythms can be considered as a resonance, a harmonic, of cosmic rhythms. The small aura very often represented Green and Red around the head, and the large Blue and Yellow aura englobing the whole body, are the small and large microcosmic orbits of Taoist practices. These two auras or orbits open, regenerate and are produced in this order, which is that of the Moon phases: Green and Red, then Blue and Yellow (picture 34).

The Green-Red-Blue-Yellow sequence is contained like a sleeping snake, not yet awakened, inside the spine. Green can be attributed to the lumbosacral joint, Red to the thoracic spine, Blue to the cervical one; Yellow stands for the head and the connection to it. In traditional Inca costumes, Yellow is the head itself of the person wearing the garment. In Egypt, the one of the four Sons of Horus who represents the principle of the Earth is the only one to have a human head, it is Imset. In my book, I explained in detail the meaning of the four Sons of Horus, and that of the four associated Goddesses (picture 35).

The serpent of vitality awakens from the bottom to the top, and in Egyptian representations the Green-Red-Blue order always progresses from the base to the head. This order of the principles is the same as the one associated in India with the chakras : up to above the first chakra, there are Svadhisthana (Water), Manipura (Fire) and Anahata (Air)...
Vitality awakens upwards as if by capillarity, but like a convection current, the radiation produced then falls downwards and covers the physical form. At this moment it generates an aura, and reveals the form of the Desire Body, a kind of spiritual body which is inside the Vital Body. The Desire Body has the shape of an ovoid surrounding and penetrating the dense matter of the Physical Body; it is perceived by a practitioner when a certain degree of self-mastery and wisdom is authentically acquired.

Because the radiation returns downwards covering our organism, the three main Bodies of the individual (Desire Body, Vital Body and Physical Body) are aligned and connected; this is the very condition allowing spiritual and individual evolution. It is also because of this reversal that colours (both in Asia and in Mesoamerica) are sometimes depicted in the other direction : Green upwards, and Yellow downwards. In Amerindian drawings they are most often supplemented by the two other colours (Violet and Brown) I mentioned previously.

In acupuncture the Shu (Ancient) Points which are located at the extremities of the limbs follow the order Green-Red-Blue-Yellow from the extremities of the limbs towards the trunk. Many images of this order (from the extremities to the trunk) are found in Asia, and they have their equivalent in the Codices and Amerindian artifacts (pictures 36, 37).

As for the vitality meridians, some travel from point to point in the order Green-Red-Blue-Yellow (YIN of feet and YANG of hands), and others in the opposite order Yellow-Blue-Red-Green (YANG of feet and YIN of hands).
These two circulations keep alive a vitality flow, one part of which rises in the spine, descends to the chest and enters the left of the column, and the other part of which rises in the chest, descends in the column and exits to the right. The most accurate presentation of this double current is found, for those interested and according to my own experience, in the work of Max Heindel.

I hope I have, with this article, stimulated the reader’s interest about astronomical cycles, by presenting the idea that human vitality is not independent of them, and that there is therefore a real interest in studying them.
There are many marvellous Amerindian drawings and artifacts, but their initiatic meaning can only be grasped by the researcher who is sincerely involved in the deeper, spiritual side of human life. It is because in these fields, it is necessary to be guided and educated by a practitioner who has already worked extensively on these subjects, that I intend to open a Study and Practice Centre in France, and to offer workshops and courses to any interested person.

The Centre will be called CEPAI («Centre d’Etude et de Pratique de l’Alchimie Intérieure» in French) and refers to the notion of inner alchemy, simply because the practical applications of cosmic cycles fall under the notion of alchemy and personal transformation. Studies of the traditions on the three major continents (America, Africa, and Eurasia/Oceania) will be shared to the public, in order to show (thanks to archeological findings) that the source of knowledge is in fact common to all nations, and goes beyond cultural limitations.

As for the practical aspects, it will be learned how to set up a ritual or a training, and in what successive phases it must be articulated to become effective; these exercises will concern both the material body (relaxation, conscious movements and choreographies), the mastery of vitality (work on areas of the body and on acupuncture points), as well as mental peace, meditation and self-knowledge.
It will first be learned, with the principles taught, how to work on oneself, and only then, how to practice care on others.

It will be with great joy that I will share the fruit of my research on the meaning and the origin of the I Ching. Each Hexagram of the I Ching refers to a particular circulation, and this circulation can in itself be the subject of vitality practices. The 32 pairs of Hexagrams also have their equivalent in the Codex Borgia, in regard to Amerindian cultures. From this, we understand that they also refer to the analysis of specific celestial movements (picture 38).

Thank you for your attention !
May your life be filled with gratitude, humility and courage in these difficult times.

Many thanks to my friend Sergiy Nikolaichuk for his help in making the drawings in vector format.
