The Mexicolore Aztecs team
Mexicolore (‘Mexico - the Lore of the Land’) was set up in 1980 by Graciela Sánchez, for many years a professional dancer with the world famous Ballet Folklórico de México company, and Ian Mursell, an audio-visual consultant, development education specialist, and postgraduate from Sussex University.
Between them they have created a unique team which has worked for over four decades in partnership with the Museum of Mankind, the British Museum, the Royal Academy of Arts, World Museum Liverpool, the BBC, some 2,000 schools the length and breadth of England, and a wealth of institutions, groups and individuals seeking to learn from Mexico’s culture and people.
We see our role on a rough par with that of the Aztec owl (a messenger between different levels of the universe): in our very much more down-to-earth case, as bearers and interpeters both of the knowledge of the experts and the wisdom of the ancients that all of us can learn so much from... Our humble task is simply to gather ‘scattered jades’ (to use an Aztec term) in one place to share with others.
And there’s a lovely old saying about the owl (by Edward H. Richards) which is rather telling:
The wise old owl lived in an oak;
The more he saw the less he spoke;
The less he spoke the more he heard:
Why can’t we all be like that bird?
We believe we’re now the longest-running artefact-based teaching team in the country!
We dedicate this site to our 4 wonderful children, each of whom appears somewhere on the site (though they probably don’t realise it!), with all our love...
