Work Experience

Work experience student with Mexicolore in a school

The Mexicolore teaching team actively encourage school and college students to spend a day, a week, a month or a term working with them in schools...

Now regularly fully booked each term, we're seeking ways to expand our capacity in order to meet the steadily increasing demand from schools around the UK for our services. We plan to take on new core staff as well as seek assistance from part-timers and volunteers keen to experience a unique ‘Theatre-in-Education’ troupe at work.

Ideally we're looking for students who share a passion both for working with children and for what we can all learn from great civilisations of the past.

At the same time, working with Mexicolore should be of interest generally to students of education, history, museum studies, drama studies and also music (which is an important element in all our programmes).

In many ways we see ourselves as a 'travelling museum'; we offer children the chance to involve themselves in Mexican culture and history by a direct hands-on approach: the artefacts are there to be touched/worn/played and generally 'experienced'! Learning through artefacts has always been our forte and we encourage any doubter to see the 'Feedback' section of our website to be convinced of its value...

Young teenager Rebecca Mursell applied to Mexicolore for a week of work experience via her school in Sussex. Prepared to be up every day at the crack of dawn, she was aware from the start that Mexicolore is very much 'hands-on' work: sitting back and observing simply isn't an option...

Very soon she progressed from behind-the-scenes activities such as dressing children during a presentation to front-of-stage roles, ranging from teaching children basic Spanish words to demonstrating the sounds of replica Aztec wind instruments such as whistles, flutes and ocarinas.

As the week progressed we realised that Rebecca's many artistic talents could be put to good use. Already tackling Grade 8 Flute, it seemed only natural that she should be encouraged to play informal duets with Ian on Aztec instruments, recreating Aztec sounds confidently and creatively.

If you would like to follow in Rebecca's footsteps, you have only to ask!
