I would think it’s the number that is with the day sign that determines if their influence is good or bad.

Of course you’re right: what we give here is a highly simplistic, even ‘fun’, overview of the signs and some of their qualities. The truth is that the sacred/ritual ‘almanac’ or calendar was immensely complicated, with sometimes contradictory elements at work. As you say, the cycle of 20 signs meshed with a cycle of 13 numbers, giving combinations that could be interpreted as lucky, unlucky or in-between. 2-Rabbit, for example, was notoriously unfortunate as a day. The 20 signs were grouped in 4 sets of 5, each set linked to North, South, East or West; signs were influenced by particular deities, and affected by sacred trees, birds and colours. Days were divided into (13) day- and (9) night-hours, each with its own deity having a part to play, 13-day ‘weeks’ (‘trecenas’ in Spanish) were ruled by particular deities. Then the number and sign of the year itself was a further influencing factor... No wonder working out your ‘horoscope’ was a specialist job!
