Hi, I read that commoners had small religious shrines in their homes. Could you tell me what these shrines might have looked like?

M

Mexicolore

Very likely they were miniature models of temple-pyramids. We have a couple of examples on the website which give some idea -

Hope this helps a little!

I understand that over the lifespan of the Aztec empire a lot of their culture had been destroyed or lost to time but I would love to know more tales and myths of how gods interacted with everything and every one, however anytime I search for more info I get the same search results for creation myths, and the tale of the Aztecs finding their new home. I was wondering if you all could recommend any books or tips to find info that has more detail on the god’s stories kinda like a comprehensive book of Greek myths like Hercule’s adventure, Zeuses affairs, the birth and consequences of the gods, etc. but in this case for Aztec myths.

We would recommend four books in particular that we’ve very much enjoyed dipping into over the years:-
• ‘Aztec and Maya Myths’ by Karl Taube, British Museum Press, 1993
• ‘Mythology of the Aztecs and Maya’ by David M. Jones, Anness Publishing, 2003
• ‘Mesoamerican Mythology’ by Kay Almere Read and Jason J. Gonzalez, Oxford University Press, 2000
• ‘The Rabbit on the Face of the Moon: Mythology in the Mesoamerican Tradition’ by Alfredo López Austin, University of Utah Press, 1996.
This last one is perhaps the most accessible and focuses largely on the Aztecs.

Just a few questions about daily hygiene: did the Aztecs use a tool like a sponge while washing themselves, and what did they use as tampons or as toilet paper?

M

Mexicolore

Yes, they used several different types of cactus and other plant fibres (including from the Aloe Vera tree), alongside soap-like creams from trees that produced lather (the Spaniards called one such the ‘soap-tree’!) Water of course was the main toilet accessory, and stones...
