Two wooden carvings

Larry Burge writes: ‘I have 2 carvings that apperar to be Aztec. Both bought in 1953 by my parents near Duncan Arizona. 1st a bird roosting about a foot high, and the second a large dog carved out of basalt, I think, very heavy. How can I verify authentic.’
